Waterford Road Runners - Winter League Week 2 – The Fun Continues
As with week 2 last year, those that turned out to run in the wind and rain proved their grit. When you realise you’d rather run in the rain than miss a night of the winter league, you know you’ve been bitten by the bug! Even 70 more new people entered for the first time on the night. We expect more of the same this Thursday night as the league really gets into full swing.
Changing times
It’s amazing to think that 8 or 9 years ago, we would have been thrilled with a total turnout on one night of 70 runners. It demonstrates the power the league has had in getting people out the door and onto the streets to run. No one wants to be a couch potato night after night, but it’s very difficult to find your exercise niche after school or college if you don’t like gyms or classes aren’t team sport inclined. The winter league provides the right balance of challenge and health benefits, not to mind the social inclusion aspect to make running fun and to keep you coming back for more. Don’t forget it’s not too late to get your buddy to come along and sign up, this week or any week.
Andy Capper
A few people misread their handicaps on the website last week. Be sure that it’s the following week’s handicap you remember, and not the previous week’s. Any errors are easily fixed, but it can be time consuming, so be sure to double check the printouts stuck up around the RSC lobby before you go to the start line. Email adele@waterfordroadrunners.com with fixes or questions. That said, the handicap system is beginning to kick in well and will be even better tuned after another week or so. For example over 50% of the 2.5mile runners finished plus or minus 1 minute of the 30minute mark and a slightly higher number of the 5 milers finished within a minute’s range of 46minutes. As a reminder, if you are running for the first time any night, the start time for ladies is 2 minutes and for men it is 7 minutes. As always, if you have any questions, talk to Tara on the information desk on the night. Likewise if you want to change from the 2.5 to the 5 or vice versa, let Tara know beforehand as your handicap may be different.
Moving and shaking already
The first runners back to the track on the night showed that they were certainly keeping something in the tank that first night last week. Almost all of the first 15 home will see their handicap increase by 3 minutes or more this week as they sped up and down the Cork Road. Amy Deegan, Teresa Power and Yvonne Roche were the amongst the first ladies home, with Shane Anderson, Michael Moylan and Seamus Grant leading the men. On the 5 mile side, most of the first 10 home were new guys, so their ‘real’ handicap will set in this week. Apart from these guys Conor McGovern and Stephen Hartery had great runs to see them finish 5 mins faster than the week before. Running another 5mins faster won’t happen as quickly! On the ladies side, Judy O’Brien, Eilish Coady and Suzanne O’Neill all improved by a steady 2 mins. These steady improvers are the ones to watch over the coming weeks. Route reversal!
Last week’s announced route change did not happen due to the slip road down by the Yellow House being flooded. We’re delighted to say though that most runners cooperated very well with the marshalls and Gardai last week and managed to cross Ballybeg Drive at the right spot. Keeping themselves and motorists out of harm’s way. To this end, we’re hoping this will continue and have decided to leave the route as is for now. We really appreciate your helping us on this one. Keep it up!
Woodlawn Grove exit
Just a gentle reminder again to stay on the right when running on the footpath, especially if you are a 5miler winning by Woodlawn Grove when the 2.5milers are making their exit. Rumour has it that someone fell last week as a result of a collision, so please take heed of this. Likewise, those exiting the Grove should stay on the right also.
That time already?
It’s scary to see that the pumpkins have hardly been eaten and some houses already have their Christmas decorations up! Do they know it’s Christmas time…but not until December? That said, many shoppers have started making their lists. So be sure to remember that a trendy piece of running gear is always welcome and with 10% off all purchases at Alfie Hale’s Intersport for winter leaguers, you couldn’t go far wrong dropping in their for a chat with one of the staff to find something suitable for your loved one, or indeed yourself. Also, though it’s a few weeks away, it’s worth sticking December 15th into your diary as the Santa Hat Run. All proceeds from the run on this night will go to the WLR fm Lions Club Christmas Hamper Appeal. So dig out your funkiest Santa Hat in plenty of time.
Here we go again
See you tomorrow night for more fun trackside and keep up the good work in the meantime.
